“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35). Seems easy enough, right? Yet, how we give and receive love may be spoken through different languages, and within each language, a different dialect. Did you catch the directive, love…”as I have loved you so you must love one another.” It seems to me that Jesus “loves” in a variety of ways. For example… He serves, “Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end… 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:1,5). He protects with touch creating warmth, safety and protection, a God hug if you will… “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 36:7). He is The Word .. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:14) and The Word proclaims how special we are to Him… “The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” (Deuteronomy 7:6). He prefers us, desires us, and wants us to spend time with Him and let the business of life not distract us from these precious moments, “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made… [to Martha] you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:38-42). And yes, He loves us with gifts… in fact, he gave the most precious gift of all, himself. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). He gave sight to the blind (Mark 10:51-52) and hearing to the deaf (Isaiah 35:5)… He gave his all that we may love one another.
